What is urea?
When you eat proteins, the body breaks them down into amino acids. Ammonia is produced from leftover amino acids, and it must be removed from the body. The liver produces several chemicals (enzymes) that change ammonia into urea. It is a waste of metabolism that is excreted by the kidneys in urine. Kidney disease is associated with reduced urea excretion.

What is creatinine?
Creatinine is a chemical waste product in the blood that passes through the kidneys to be filtered and eliminated in urine. The chemical waste is a by-product of normal muscle function. The more muscle a person has, the more creatinine they produce. Therefore, creatinine levels in the blood reflect both the amount of muscle a person has and their kidney function.

Our kidneys are the essential organs, and poor kidney functions lead to kidney failure. The primary aim of a kidney failure diet is to balance the minerals, electrolytes, and fluids in our body. If a person has kidney failure, their creatinine level and other waste materials rise. So, it is advised that kidney patients must limit salty foods, potassium-rich diet, regulate their protein consumption, and enhance fluid intake.

Potassium is one of the vital components of the human body. It helps regulate the balancing of fluids, nerve transmissions, and muscular contractions. It must be advised to take the appropriate amount of potassium to keep your kidneys healthy. Our kidneys might not be able to eliminate excess potassium. Therefore, we have to limit the potassium intake and keep it at 2,000 mg per day.

You have to eat fruits & vegetables with low potassium. The fruits with low potassium are-
-- Apple, pineapple, peach, Jamun, cherry, papaya, kharbuja, sarifa, strawberry, chiku, etc.
-- Banana, kiwi, citrus fruits, dry fruits, have to be avoided by kidney patients as they are rich in potassium. Keep in mind – don’t add salt to your fruits. Also, you have to keep in mind that you have to moderate the high-potassium fruits. Patients with kidney disease must avoid a protein-rich diet.

In addition, there are some fruits like dates, avocado, kiwi, banana, potato, sweet potato, beetroot, arbi, spinach, cabbage, methi, and so on that are high in potassium. And, there are some leafy vegetables that you have to avoid, like coriander. You may add coriander in your paratha to add flavours, but avoid eating coriander directly, like in the form of chutney. Normal potassium level patients can eat potato after it has been leached, but not regularly. Moreover, eating vegetables like beans, ghiya, tori, parwal, ladyfinger, etc., are best for kidney failure patients as they offer vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to our body. One more thing, kidney patients have to avoid consuming fruit juices and vegetable soups. To balance the creatinine level, we recommend consuming a well-balanced diet. Sugarcane is a rich source of potassium. So, it is advised to avoid eating sugarcane in any form like jaggery. We encourage our patients to address the underlying causes of kidney failure to enhance their kidney functioning.
