"Jeg Lagde Meg Så Silde" - Medieval Norwegian Folk Song & Ballad by Jack Wale

Описание к видео "Jeg Lagde Meg Så Silde" - Medieval Norwegian Folk Song & Ballad by Jack Wale

"Jeg Lagde Meg Så Silde", also known as "The Ballad of Ole Vellan", is a Norwegian medieval ballad and folk song which belongs to the "Ridderballader" category. It tells the story of a knight who learns of his beloved's illness and, despite rushing to her, arrives only in time to see her funeral.

The story is told in the first person, giving it a particularly harrowing tone. Ole Vellan is a variant of the same ballad, told in the third person and posseses an epic tone that characterises this genre of folk songs. Both versions of the song are popular and have been documented in numerous places throughout southern Norway, as well as in Denmark and Sweden.

The melody figures as the second motif in Johan Halvorsen 's "Norsk Rhapsody no. 1". The music is set to imagery from roughly the 18th to the early 20th century instead of medieval imagery as I found it fitting with the life and times of Johan Halvorsen, the original composer of the tune. Thank you for watching and I hope you enjoy! Please excuse any of my mistakes in translation or pronunciation.
