Описание к видео "Villeman Og Magnhild" - Norwegian Folk Song by Jack Wale

"Villeman Og Magnhild" is a traditional Norwegian ballad thought to have originated in medieval Scandinavia. Having been passed down through oral tradition, there are over a hundred variants of the song in existence which are attested to in Denmark, Iceland and Sweden, as well as in Norway.

The medieval ballad tells of the troubled love story of Villeman and Magnhild, in which the pair face challenges, betrayals and the force of supernatural creatures. The full ballad is much longer than this sung version, and different versions can be read across Scandinavian literature. In Denmark and Sweden, the song is often called "Harpens Kraft" which translates into English as "The Power of the Harp".

Within this sung extract of the ballad, Villeman encounters a "Nøkken" - a being which was traditionally called in English folklore "Knucker" (such as can be found in the epic poem of Beowulf). The Nøkken is a shapeshifting water spirit which is typically portrayed as a malevolent and mischievous entity.

The Nøkken is often depicted as a handsome young man playing enchanting music on a violin or other musical instrument, drawing unsuspecting individuals towards the water's edge. Once the victims approach, the Nøkken may reveal its true, more menacing form and attempt to pull them into the water. In some variations of Scandinavian folklore, the Nøkken is also seen as a guardian spirit of the water, and its attitude towards humans can vary. Sometimes, it is portrayed as capricious and dangerous, while in other instances, it may be more benevolent and helpful, especially if appeased with gifts or offerings.

It is also worth mentioning that the content of the story of "Villeman Og Magnild" and "Harpens Kraft" bears a strong parallel to the classical tale of Orpheus and Euridice.
