മരപ്പട്ടി - വെരുക് ഒന്നല്ല Common Palm civet - Small Indian civet are Different

ഗന്ധമാർജ്ജാരം എന്ന് വെരുകിന് പേരുണ്ട്. മരപ്പട്ടിക്കും പെർണിയൽ ഗ്രന്ഥിയുണ്ട്. പക്ഷെ അത്ര നല്ല മണമല്ല അതിൽ നിന്നും വരിക.

മരപ്പട്ടിയും വെരുകും രണ്ടിനം ജീവികളാണ്. നമ്മൾ പലപ്പോഴും പരസ്പരം മാറി വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇവർ രണ്ടു പേരുടെയും സാധാരണ പേരിലെ 'സിവറ്റ്' എന്ന ഭാഗം ആണ് കൺഫ്യൂഷൻ ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്നത്. മരപ്പട്ടികളെ palm civet, civet cat എന്നിങ്ങനെ വിളിക്കുമ്പോൾ വെരുകുകളേയും Small Indian civet, Malabar civet എന്നൊക്കെത്തന്നെയാണ് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ വിളിക്കുന്നത്.
Paradoxurus ജനുസിൽ പെട്ടവയാണ് മരപ്പട്ടികൾ. ടോഡി കാറ്റ് എന്ന് കൂടി ഇവയെ വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. പനങ്കള്ളും , തെങ്ങിൽ കള്ളും കട്ടു കുടിക്കുന്നവരായതിനാൽ, കള്ളുണ്ണി, കല്ലുണ്ണി, കല്ലുണ്ണി മെരു , കല്ലുണ്ണി വെരുക്, പഴ ഉണ്ണി, പന മെരു, പന വെരുക് എന്നൊക്കെ നാട്ട് പേരുകൾ ഉണ്ട്. ഏഷ്യൻ പാം സിവറ്റ് എന്ന് ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ വിളിക്കുന്ന Paradoxurus hermaphroditus ആണ് നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിലെ മരപ്പട്ടികൾ. എന്നാൽ ഇവരിൽ നിന്ന് വ്യത്യസ്ഥമായി വേറെ തന്നെ - Viverricula ജനുസിൽ പെട്ടതാണ് വെരുകുകൾ. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിൽ സാധാരണയായി കാണുന്ന സ്മാൾ ഇന്ത്യൻ സിവറ്റിനെ ( Viverricula indica) വെരുക് , പൂവെരുക് , പുള്ളി വെരുക് , മെരു - എന്നിങ്ങനെ ഒക്കെ പേരുകൾ വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്.

The small Indian civet (Viverricula indica) is a civet native to South and Southeast Asia. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List because of its widespread distribution, widespread habitat use and healthy populations living in agricultural and secondary landscapes of many range states
