തുമ്പിയുടെ ലാർവ അല്ല കുഴിയാന! ANTLION LACEWING IS NOT DRAGONFLY

കുഴിയാന പൂർണമായ ഒരു ജീവിയല്ല. പലരും തെറ്റായി ധരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നതു പോലെ തുമ്പികളുടെ ലാർവയും അല്ല. കരുത്തന്മാരയ കല്ലൻ തുമ്പികളോ (dragonflies Anisoptera) സാധു സൂചി - നൂലൻ തുമ്പികളോ (damselflies Zygoptera) കുഴിയാനയുടെ രൂപാന്തരം വഴി ഉണ്ടാകുന്നവയല്ല. തുമ്പികളോട് ബന്ധമില്ലാത്ത Myrmeleontidae കുടുംബത്തിലെ വേറെ ഷഡ്പദങ്ങളായ antlion lacewings ആണിവ. കാഴ്ചയിൽ സൂചിത്തുമ്പികളോട് ചെറിയ സാമ്യം തോന്നുന്ന ഇവ ഗോത്രപരമായിപോലും തുമ്പികളുമായി ഒരു ബന്ധവുമില്ല. എങ്കിലും ഇവയെ ‘കുഴിയാനത്തുമ്പി” എന്ന് ആരോ മലയാളത്തിൽ പേരിട്ടതിനാൽ പഴയ സ്കൂൾ ടീച്ചർമാർ പറഞ്ഞ് തെറ്റിച്ച് പഠിപ്പിച്ചത് ആണ് പ്രശ്നമായത്. രണ്ട് ജോഡി മനോഹര ലേസ് ചിറകുകൾ , നീണ്ട ആന്റിനകൾ, എന്നിവയൊക്കെ ആയി ഒരു ആനച്ചന്തമൊക്കെയുണ്ട് കാഴ്ചയിൽ. ലാർവ ചെറുതാണെങ്കിലും വിരിഞ്ഞ് വരുന്ന ലേസ് വിങ്ങ് പ്രാണിക്ക് നല്ല വലിപ്പമുണ്ടാകും. ഇരപിടിയന്മാരെ ഭയന്ന് , പകൽ സമയങ്ങളിൽ ചെടിപ്പടർപ്പുകൾക്കിടയിലും മറ്റും ഒളിഞ്ഞ് വിശ്രമിക്കുന്ന ഇവ സന്ധ്യയോടെ ഇരതേടാനും ഇണചേരാനും പറന്നുതുടങ്ങും. നമുക്ക് കാണാൻ കിട്ടാൻ പ്രയാസമാണ്. കുഴിയാനയായി മാസങ്ങളും വർഷവും ജീവിച്ചത് പോലെ യഥാർത്ഥ ജീവിതത്തിന് ദൈർഘ്യം ഉണ്ടാവില്ല. ദിവസങ്ങൾ മാത്രം നീളുന്ന പറന്നുള്ള ജീവിതം. ഇണ ചേരലും മുട്ടയിടലും മാത്രമാണ് ഏക ലക്ഷ്യം! പെൺകുഴിയാനത്തുമ്പികൾ മണലിൽ മുട്ടയിടുന്നു. അവ വിരിഞ്ഞ് പുതിയ കുഴിയാനകൾ ഉണ്ടാകുന്നതോടെ ജീവിതചക്രം പൂർത്തിയാകുന്നു.
The antlions are a group of about 2,000 species of insect in the neuropteran family Myrmeleontidae. They are known for the predatory habits of their larvae, which mostly dig pits to trap passing ants or other prey. In North America, the larvae are sometimes referred to as doodlebugs because of the marks they leave in the sand. The adult insects are less well known due to their relatively short lifespans compared to the larvae. Adults, sometimes known as antlion lacewings, mostly fly at dusk or just after dark and may be mistakenly identified as dragonflies or damselflies.
