《CAMPANOLA COSMOSIGN》
The fundamental characteristic of the COSMOSIGN, CAMPANOLA is that the planisphere is incorporated into the dial. The planisphere makes one anticlockwise rotation in 23 h 56 min 4 s, and this time is adjusted with Earth’s rotation cycle. The standard latitude is 35°N. Owing to this specification, the COSMOSIGN, CAMPANOLA can be practically used anywhere on earth near the 35°N-latitude.
《Original experiences in astronomical observation.》
When Mr. Hideo Uehara was in the third grade of elementary school, he was deeply impressed viewing the Moon and Saturn through an astronomical telescope. He felt a connection between the movement of stars in the sky and the concept of time. In his second year of high school, he made his own reflecting telescope, after which he began to study astronomy in earnest. In his 7th year at Citizen Watch Co., Ltd., he was able to make his own high-precision telescopes. He soon concentrated more on making astronomical telescopes and observations, leading him to build an astronomical observatory in his house. He continued to design watches with the thought, “I cannot live without astronomical watches.”
《Beginning of making astronomical watches》
The production of astronomical watches was triggered by the voluntary self-proposal system established in Citizen Watch Co., Ltd. in 1984. Mr. Uehara was given a chance to commercialize his ideas using this system. Then, proposing the idea that the constellation could be displayed on a dial, he designed the first version of the COSMOSIGN. In 1986, world’s first quartz wristwatch with a constellation display was exhibited for reference in Basel, Switzerland, and it received a huge response.
The COSMOSIGN was aimed for so high a grade that even astronomy specialists would be satisfied, and was produced with a strong commitment to the displayed contents. In designing the planisphere, the master disks were fabricated from the data obtained using the coordinate calculation at each 1/1,000 mm. In the construction, the star magnitude is changed at 0.1 intervals and divided into four colors depending on the spectra. The names, abbreviations, and borders of nebula/constellations are also displayed. These specifications show the commitment to high-grade content.

People of ancient times realized the connection with time through the signs they felt by looking at the starry sky. As civilization developed, environmental pollution made it impossible to see stars and feel the connection with celestial bodies. The COSMOSIGN, CAMPANOLA is made with the idea that it can be used as a tool to inform “which stars are visible now.”

◆Infinite starry sky widespread on the dial
The dial of the COSMOSIGN is a precise planisphere wherein all-sky constellations at latitude 35°N are displayed. Precisely, 1,027 fixed stars, 166 nebulae, and star clusters, including the Andromeda Galaxy and Orion Nebula are displayed.
