Discussions about the Idukki dam and Mullaperiyar dam have been active on social media for the past few days. During these discussions, I came across some technical statements. One statement I heard was that the water stored in the Idukki dam has many times more energy than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, and that if the dam were to burst, Kerala would face much more destruction than what happened in Hiroshima. Similarly, I heard statements that the Mullaperiyar dam is a gravity dam, and that gravity dams are naturally very stable and will not collapse no matter what happens. I also heard a statement that the shape of a gravity dam is like a pyramid, and that like the pyramids of Egypt, they will last for centuries.

The goal of this video is to clarify some of the technical points I heard as part of this. Does the water stored in the Idukki dam really have many times more energy than an atomic bomb? Similarly, what is a gravity dam? What is the reason for saying that such dams are naturally safe? Does it mean that if a gravity dam has a pyramid shape, it will never collapse? ഏതാനും ദിവസങ്ങളായി ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിനെ കുറിച്ചും മുല്ലപെരിയാർ ഡാമിനെ കുറിച്ചും ഉള്ള ചർച്ചകൾ social മീഡിയയിൽ സജീവമാണ് . ആ ചർച്ചകൾക്കിടയിൽ ചില technical statements കേൾക്കാൻ ഇടയായി.
ഇടുക്കി ഡാമിൽ store ചെയ്തിരിക്കുന്ന വെള്ളത്തിൽ, ഹിരോഷിമയിൽ പൊട്ടിച്ച atom ബോംബിനേക്കാൾ പല മടങ്ങ് energy store ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടുണ്ട് എന്നും ഡാം പൊട്ടിയാൽ ഹിരോഷിമയിൽ സംഭവിച്ചതിനേക്കാൾ പല മടങ്ങു കൂടുതൽ നാശനഷ്ടം കേരളത്തിൽ ഉണ്ടാകും എന്നും ഒരു statement കേട്ടിരുന്നു. അതുപോലെ തന്നെ മുല്ലപെരിയാർ ഡാം ഒരു gravity dam ആണെന്നും gravity damഉകൾ സ്വാഭാവികമായി തന്നെ വളരെ stable ആണെന്നും എന്തൊക്കെ സംഭവിച്ചാലും അത് പൊട്ടില്ല എന്നും ഉള്ള രീതിയിലുള്ള statementsഉം കേട്ടിരുന്നു. Gravity damഇന്റെ shape pyramid പോലെയാണെന്നും, അതുകൊണ്ട് egyptഇലെ പിരമിഡുകളെ പോലെ തന്നെ ഇവയും നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളോളം നിലനിൽക്കും എന്നും ഒരു statement കേട്ടിരുന്നു.
