My review of the BFI’s release of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. This is a 2013 upgrade of the Photoplay restoration with Carl Davis score. The disc is region free and presents the 1929 version from a new 2K scan. Most notable is its presentation of the 1925 version from a new HD scan.
I go over each transfer, technical merits, the sources available, the packaging, art, booklet, extras and why I think this is an important release. As of 2022 this is the best presentation of either version ever on home video. I make comparisons to the Kino Lorber release which I liked aspects of in spite of its technical problems.
