肇慶市，簡稱肇，古稱端州，位於廣東省西部，是粵港澳大灣區的一部分。市境東北界清遠市，東南臨佛山市，西南接雲浮市，西北達廣西壯族自治區梧州市、賀州市。地處珠江三角洲西部山地丘陵區，地形西北高，東南低。北部為綏江谷地，中南部為西江谷地，北嶺山橫亙市區北部。綏江自北入境東南斜貫全市，西江由西往東流經市境南緣並穿過市區，在東南部與北江匯合成珠江。全市總面積14,891平方公里，總人口411.36萬，市民政府駐端州區。肇慶是國家歷史文化名城，明嘉靖四十三年（1564年）至清乾隆十一年（1746年），肇慶曾為兩廣總督駐地長達180餘年。肇慶亦是南明永歷時朝的首都。

The city borders Qingyuan City in the northeast, Foshan City in the southeast, Yunfu City in the southwest, and Wuzhou City and Hezhou City in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in the northwest. It is located in the mountainous and hilly area in the western part of the Pearl River Delta, with high terrain in the northwest and low terrain in the southeast. The northern part is the Suijiang Valley, the central and southern part is the Xijiang Valley, and the Beiling Mountain stretches across the northern part of the city. The Suijiang River enters the city from the north and runs diagonally southeast through the entire city. The Xijiang River flows from west to east through the southern edge of the city and through the urban area, and merges with the Beijiang River in the southeast to form the Pearl River. The total area of ​​the city is 14,891 square kilometers, with a total population of 4.1136 million. The Municipal People's Government is located in Duanzhou District. Zhaoqing is a national historical and cultural city. From the 43rd year of Jiajing in the Ming Dynasty (1564) to the 11th year of Qianlong in the Qing Dynasty (1746), Zhaoqing was the residence of the Governor-General of Guangdong and Guangxi for more than 180 years. Zhaoqing was also the capital of the Yongli Dynasty of the Southern Ming Dynasty.
Zhaoqing was called Duanzhou in ancient times. The name Duanzhou began in the ninth year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (589). The Taiping Huanyu Ji said: "It was named after Duanxi in the boundary". In the third year of Yuanfu in the Song Dynasty (1100), Emperor Huizong of Song Dynasty was the Prince of Duan before he ascended the throne. Duanzhou was his "hidden residence". He believed that it was the spiritual energy of Duanzhou that enabled him to ascend the throne. Therefore, he promoted Duanzhou to be the military governor and named it Xingqing. Three years later (the third year of Zhenghe (1113)), it was upgraded to a prefecture. In the first year of Chonghe in the Song Dynasty (1118), Yan Ying, the then Guangdong transport envoy, proposed to change Xingqing to Zhaoqing. Emperor Huizong of Song Dynasty then changed Xingqing Prefecture to Zhaoqing Prefecture and bestowed the name "Zhaoqing" by the emperor, which means "beginning to bring good luck".
