On Saturday, May11,1985, a fire broke out at Bradford City's Valley Parade stadium during an English League Third Division match between Bradford City and Lincoln City, killing 56 people and injuring at least 265 others.

The stadium, which had been home to Bradford City Football Club for a long time, was known for its antiquated design and facilities, which included the main stand's wooden roof. There had also been previous warnings about a major build-up of litter in the cavity beneath the seats in the stand. The stand had been declared unsafe and was set to be replaced with a steel structure once the season was over.

The disaster prompted the introduction of stringent new safety regulations in UK stadiums, including the prohibition of new wooden grandstands. It was also a catalyst for the redevelopment and modernisation of many British football stadiums over the next thirty years. Bradford City's official charity continues to be the University of Bradford's burns unit.
