This is from my interview on May 17th, 1999 with Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner Wendy Wasserstein. Known for her award-winning play THE HEIDI CHRONICLES, I put this short piece together for my film/tv producing partner, Jamie deRoy, who is part of the producing team of the new revival of THE HEIDI CHRONICLES on Broadway, starring Elizabeth "Mad Men" Moss. Wasserstein talks of being raised on Broadway by theatre-loving parents, her first big break being produced Off-Broadway, and how it felt to be the first female author to win a Tony Award alone for her play. Happily, Ms. Wasserstein was already pregnant with daughter Lucy, who would be born September 12th, 1999, even though she had still not announced it publicly or told most of her friends. But, sadly, she also already knew that she had Lymphoma, which would claim her life in early 2006. This is a precious piece of history with a woman who had a great gift but was not destined to be on the planet long enough to fully enjoy her talent or her daughter that she had chosen to have in spite of all her doctors' warnings. Long may you wave Wendy!
