Eras Analyzed: Lady Gaga's Artpop

Today we're talking Artpop, Lady Gaga's third album that many consider to be either her "flop era" or her misunderstood masterpiece that was ahead of its time. The album was inspired by pop art, adn the likes of Warhol and Jeff Koons, as well as how their work (and GaGa's music) operates in the high art world. The album is also inspired by high art from the Renaissance, like Boticelli's Birth of Venus. There are actualyl several Venus references in this era, be it Gaga's costumes, or the song on the album of the same title. I can't exactly remember the Warhol soupcan metaphor Gaga used to describe the album, but you can hear me make sense of it in the video. In Artpop, GaGa also grappbles with being a pop star, and an "archetypal" blonde one at that, and how society treats these stars. She covers this is songs like Applause, Donatella, Mary Jane Holland, and others. Love or hate the album, the Artpop era is a conversation piece on its own, because over the decade it's inspired several conversations as to what constitutes low and high art, what exactly "pop" and "popular" mean, how art is canonized, and how it's remembered.
