Amid tension surrounding the news about the proposed burial of Kuki-Zo tribals at Haolai Khopi village in Manipur’s Churachandpur district, the Indigenous Tribal Leaders Forum (ITLF) has postponed the burial plan for another five days.

As per the ITLF, the decision was taken following a marathon meeting that continued till 4:00 am today and assurance given by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The ITLF said that Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and the Central Young Mizo Association (CYMA) also made similar requests.

Controversy shrouded the proposed burial ceremony after the state government claimed that the land where the deceased are to be buried belonged to the government. Earlier, in the day a confrontation between protestors from the Meitei community and security personnel broke out after a large number of people reached Bishnupur to raise opposition against the use of government land for the burial ceremony.

However, the condolence service for those who died during the ongoing violence was carried out as per the program. Thousands of people congregated at Peace Ground in Tuibong to pay their respect to those who died due to the ongoing violence.

Pagin Haokip, Chairman ITLF paid his respect to the deceased and read out the written assurance given by the Home Minister in front of the public. The condolence message was delivered by Rev. S. Vungminthang, Chairman of the Christian Goodwill Council, Churachandpur who also offered a solemn prayer for the departed souls to rest in peace.
