ಉಡುಪಿ ಶೈಲಿ ಪಡುವಲಕಾಯಿ ಮೇಲೋಗರ | Udupi Special Padavalakai Melogara | Snake Gourd Curry

Try this slightly sweetish, slightly spicy Udupi Mangalore style Melogara made out of Padavalaki or Snake Gourd. Goes well with Chapathi or Rice. Narrated in Kannada with English subtitles.

Ingredients:

Rice - 2 tsp
Grated Coconut - 1 Cup
Cumin Seeds - 1 tsp
Green Chillies - 2
Oil - 1 Tbsp
Mustard Seeds - 1 tsp
Curry Leaves -8-10
Chopped Snake Gourd - 2 medium-sized
Salt - As per taste
Jaggery - 2 tsp

Method:

1. Wash 2 tsp Rice and soak the same in water for half an hour prior to preparing this Melogara.

2. Add 1 Cup grated Coconut to a mixer jar.

3. Add soaked Rice with the soaked water.

4. Add 1 tsp Cumin Seeds, 2 Green Chillies, and little water and grind to a smooth paste.

5. Add 1 Tbsp of Oil to a pan. Once the Oil turns hot add 1 tsp Mustard Seeds. Once the Mustard Seeds splutter, add 8-10 Curry Leaves and fry them.

6. Add finely chopped 2 medium-sized Snake Gourds. Mix well with the help of a spatula. Add water till it immerses the Snake Gourd pieces. Mix once and cook by closing the lid.

7. Open the lid in intervals and mix the contents while cooking. Once the Snake Gourd or Padavalakai is cooked slightly, add ground Coconut paste, add the washed mixer jar water to the pan.

8. Mix once and allow to boil. Add little water and allow to cook for 5 minutes.

9. Add Salt as per taste and 2 tsp Jaggery. Mix again and allow to cook.

10. Boil it for 3-4 minutes and switch off the flame.
