The first official victim was Vicki Heath. On February 21st 1987, her body was found behind a Super 8 Motel in an untended back lot. She had been attacked, robbed, beaten, and shot twice. Investigators recovered footprints, discharged rounds, and the perpetrator's DNA.

Margaret "Peggy" Gill would be found in the abandoned wing of Days Inn Motel on March 3rd, 1989. Her clothes were folded neatly beside her body. She had been attacked and shot, similar to Vicki Heath. And she would not be the only female hotel clerk discovered that day.

Just 50 miles south on I-65, Jeanne Marie Gilbert would be attacked on the same night as Peggy Gill. She was working the Days Inn in Remington, Indiana, when she was attacked and detained by the perpetrator. He abducted her and drove south on I-65 before retreating along rural exit into the countryside. A farmer would report hearing gunshots before later reporting her body to police.

Shortly after, two unnamed victims would be attacked. They would survive and provide a description to police that was developed into two separate police sketches. The victims would go unidentified to avoid reprisal against them or their families.

Police believe many other victims have yet to be connected. For example, many theorize that the murders of Evelyn Wright and James Walton are connected to this serial killer due to similarities in victimology, timeline, and locations. However, DNA does not link these cases with the other five.

In 2022, investigative genealogy would identify the I-65 killer as Harry Edward Greenwell. While many researchers are still investigating his background, dozens of newspaper articles trace his criminal history over the years.
