Spring has sprung in the Connecticut valley, and the smell of coal smoke has yet again returned the townspeople of Essex County. We find ourselves once again at the well-known Essex Steam Train and River Boat, more commonly known as the Valley Railroad. To kick of the steam season, the railroad has 2-8-2 Mikado #3025 fired up for coach train duty. 3025 may proudly wear the New Haven name, but she is no familiar face to the former New Haven branch line. Built in 1989 by the Tangshan Locomotive Works, 3025 was formerly known as 1658, more properly named "SY1658M." The SY being her class of locomotive, an SY type Mikado, 1658 being her running number, and the M standing for "Americanized," meaning that they were built from the factory to order with right-hand sided controls. After being torched in a roundhouse fire on the Knox and Kane railroad of Pennsylvania, 1658's former and original owner, she was sold the Valley Railroad in 2008, and 4 years later, 1658 now 3025, rolled out of the Valley's LSF for the first time. After almost 15 years of pulling trains in the Connecticut Valley, 2025 marks a big year in 3025's lifetime. The federal mandated boiler inspection, better known as a "1472" day inspection, looms over the locomotive at the time of filming. A 1472 rebuild means the entire engine has to be torn apart, inspected, and rebuilt to meet FRA specifications, after either 1,472 days of running, or 15 years of service. In the meantime, lets follow the 3025 as she serves out what could be her last spring trains, for the foreseeable future.
