Menhaz Zaman, a Canadian originally with a bright future, studied mechanical engineering at York University but secretly failed and hid this fact from his family. This double life led to immense pressure and a mental breakdown. In July 2019, he murdered his father, mother, grandmother, and sister in their home. He posted photos of his crimes on Discord, initially taken as a joke by his online friends, but soon realized to be real. Menhaz expressed deep regret for his actions in court, asking for forgiveness from those he harmed. In November 2020, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of early release for 40 years.
