Karipap or curry puff is a small, deep-fried or baked pastry shell filled with thick beef or chicken or sardines fish and potatoes curry. It is believed that the flavorful snack was invented by the Malays from the Malay Peninsula (Malaysia) and parts of Sumatra and Borneo. We will provide more information about karipap below, so scroll down if you are interested.
We have never owned or used an air fryer before, but Auntie Laini, a friend of our mom who regularly used Air Fryer to fry karipap said that they tasted really delicious and better than frying using oil in a pan or baking using conventional oven. She was the one that introduced the air fryer. It is a current trend & style for healthy cooking and healthy living.
There’s no question that air fryers are hugely popular. This gadget has surged in popularity over the last few years—nearly 40% of U.S. homes had one as of July 2020, according to a market researcher. But the question is, with so many of them in the market now, what is the best air fryer to buy. Obviously, you just need to research and find the ones that fits your needs, capacity and style.
In the previous video unboxed & showcased the Ninja Air Fryer (AF101). In that unboxing video we provide our initial review and first impression. In this video we will be demonstrating how to cook karipap using the Ninja Air Fryer as well as providing a comparison how this Malaysian popular snacks turned our when fried using air fryer versus deep fried in hot oil.
My mom actually liked the one fried using the air fryer but my dad preferred the old style way of cooking karipap. My brother Hizami think the ones cooked using the air fryer tasted a little bland. I think with a little tweak, the air fryer could cook the curry puffs better than deep fried. By the way, this video will be one of the last videos my brother Hizami will appear because he will be returning back to his dorm at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Cambridge near Boston. He has been staying home with us for the past 11 months due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Abour Karipap:
A curry puff (Malay: Karipap, Epok-epok; Chinese: 咖哩角,咖哩饺; pinyin: gālí jiǎo; Thai: กะหรี่ปั๊บ, RTGS: karipap, pronounced [kā.rìː.páp]) is a snack of Maritime Southeast Asian origin. It is a small pie consisting of curry with beef (sometimes substituted with chicken, fish sardines or vegetables for vegans or vegatarians) and potatoes in a deep-fried or baked pastry shell. The curry is quite thick to prevent it from oozing out of the snack.
Although the origin of this snack is believed to be Malaysia, it was due in part to the various influences of the British Cornish pasty, the Portuguese empanada (Malacca) and the Indian samosa during the colonization era. The curry puff is one of several "puff" type pastries with different fillings, though now it is by far the most common. Other common varieties include eggs, sardines, and onions or sweet fillings such as yam.
There are a few version of the curry puffs depending which ethnicity made them. Curry puffs are enjoyed throughout Brunei, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Myanmar and Thailand. It also shares many similarities with the empanada, a popular pastry in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries. It is also very similar to the Chinese crispy fried dumpling, a popular Fujian snack filled with Chinese garlic chives or crushed peanut at Guangdong eaten during Chinese New Year. The Chinese Malaysian applied the Chinese pastry method of the crispy dumpling replaced with the curry and created the spiral with multi-layer version.
