In this video, Dr. Puru Dhawan talks about the healthy diet plan for kidney failure patients. He will tell about what kidney failure patients should take care of in their diet. Let's discuss!

Why is the proper & healthy diet plan important for kidney patients?

Diet plays an important role in reducing the amount of waste material like creatinine and urea from a kidney failure patient's body. In a kidney failure patient, diet plays an important role. Due to the improper functioning of kidneys, waste materials start accumulating in our body.

Now let's discuss how we control creatinine by following a proper diet plan.

What is Creatinine? And, how to control creatinine level with diet?

Creatinine is a type of protein or waste material excreted by the muscles during muscle metabolism and found in the blood & urine. And, if the kidney failure patients consume more protein in diet (non-veg, pulses, dairy products, etc.), it increases creatinine in their body.

The first and foremost thing that every kidney failure patient must do is reduce protein intake in their diet. If your KFT report shows a normal creatinine level, you must reduce the protein intake. If you have a lower level of protein in your diet, in that case, you should avoid taking non-veg in your diet but add pulses in your diet (3-4 times a week). For example, you can intake pulses with rice or chapatti.

Your protein intake amount will depend on your KFT test report.

What is Urea?

Urea is also a type of waste material in the human body. When it accumulates in our body, it shows several symptoms like difficulty in thinking and talking. Urea may also cause vomiting, nausea, headache, trouble in concentrating, muscle fatigue, little or no appetite, etc.

Urea can only be controlled with the help of kidneys. The kidney is an organ with a unique ability to increase its function. Therefore, a kidney failure patient should not consume heavy food items like oily foods, fried food, fatty foods, or protein foods, like poori, kachori, bhatura, or excess ghee or butter.

Next, we will talk about potassium. What is Potassium?

Most of us don't know about potassium. And, most of the individuals think potassium is not a harmful substance. But, the reality is potassium is more harmful than urea & creatinine for our body. Why?

If the potassium level is normal, then it gives strength to our muscles. But, once its level becomes high, it causes muscle fatigue. So, when the amount of potassium in a person increases, then the person's muscles start feeling tired, which becomes a hindrance in keeping the body healthy.

To control potassium, you should follow a proper diet plan. Potassium is found in approx. all foodstuff. You should take the foodstuff with less amount of potassium. Some examples of foodstuff rich in potassium are banana, kiwi, avocado, dry fruits, dates, potatoes, green leafy vegetables like spinach, bathua, methi, sarso, coriander (dhaniya), juices, and jaggery (gur). At the same time, the foodstuff that can be consumed without any worry and which contain less amount of potassium are carrot, beans, radish, cucumber, rice, chapatti, etc.

The leaching process is helpful to control potassium, but there is a disadvantage of this process, i.e., it removes essential nutrients like vitamins & minerals from vegetables. Leached food also causes weakness in our body. So, it is advised to take leached food only when your potassium level gets higher than the normal level.

What is sodium?

Sodium plays an important role in maintaining high blood pressure as it also reduces swelling in the legs, feet, and ankles. Salt is the major source of sodium. If your blood pressure is high, then you should consume less amount of salt or sodium. Restricting sodium or salt in the diet can help in proper kidney functioning & prevent a patient from dialysis or transplant.

You should avoid consuming sour foodstuff like orange, mango, sweet lime (mosambi), grapes, etc.

The main purpose of a kidney failure diet is to keep the levels of electrolytes, fluids, and minerals balanced in the body, but when a person has kidney failure, the levels of creatinine and other waste material in the body increases. Therefore, a kidney patient must decrease intake of salty foods, adjust protein intake, limit foods high in potassium and manage fluid intake.
