Om Swami says that everyone would have heard about the seven and a half years of Shani. For many astrologers, this is the number one cash cow and the astrologer who wants to make money doesn’t see people coming to him as helpless and sad but as a sacrificial goat. They then make the most of it.
Om Swami says that there is nothing to be scared or worried about the seven and a half years of Shani dasa. The whole subject is mathematical and there are some calculations involved. But once understood it’s easy and not overwhelming. He says, there are nine planets governing our horoscope and they are, Surya, Chandra, Mangal, Buddh, Guru, Shukra, Shani, Rahu, and Ketu. A zodiacal wheel is 360 degrees and there are twelve zodiac signs starting from Aries and ending with Pisces. Each rashi(sign)is 30 degrees. This 30 degrees is covered by different signs with varying times. Chandra(moon) takes just 2.5 days and Buddh takes anywhere between 15-60 days to go from one sign to another. The planets moving in a clockwise direction and that is the right direction, are called margi and the planets moving in an anti-clockwise are called vakri. Vakri means something that is not straight but to be vakri requires lot of strength. So sometimes when Buddh becomes vakri, instead of 15 days it ends up taking anywhere between 15 to 60 days to move from one sign to another.
Surya(Sun) and Chandra(moon) never become vakri or move anti-clockwise. Rahu and Ketu are always vakri or move anti-clockwise.
