If you have lower back pain, these yoga pose variations can be a helpful tool in maintaining mobility as you recover from a flare-up or episode of low back pain. It is safe to round your spine in most cases of low back pain. Even in the case of a herniated disc, or bulging disc, child's pose can induce mild amounts of spinal flexion which is often used therapeutically by physical therapists and chiropractors as a low back pain exercise. This motion hydrates and nourishes the spinal disc. It has also been shown to reduce and heal disc herniations. This variation of the common yoga pose, child's pose, is modified from a therapeutic exercise method called the McKenzie Method.

Even with acute low back pain, these gentle exercises can be used to attempt to find a directional preference, which is simply a direction of movement for the low back that feels good. It may be that rounding your back in spinal flexion makes it feel better, or possibly worse. Use common sense here and if it feels worse, try other movements instead for now, but don't completely abandon the idea of movement altogether! Motion is lotion for the spine. Movement is medicine. Even some gentle restorative yoga poses can help relieve pain in the low back, and the aid of slow breathing and mindfulness is a great tool for managing fear and apprehension surrounding back pain when something flares up.
