Upma | Khara Bath - south Indian Breakfast
Ingredients
Oil - 1 tablespoon
Split Bengal gram/Chana dal - 1teaspoon
Split black gram/Urad dal - 1 teaspoon
Mustard seeds/Rai - 1 teaspoon
Asafoetida powder/Hing powder - a pinch
Turmeric powder/Haldi powder - 1/2 pinch
Curry leaves - a few
Green chili/Hari mirch - 2 slits
Ginger/Adrak - 1/2 teaspoon grated
Tomato/Tamatar - 3 medium size chopped
Green peas/Hare matar - 1/2 cup
Salt - to taste
Cashew nuts/Kaju - 6 to 8 roasted (optional)
Semolina/Sooji - 1 cup
Water - 3 cups
Sugar - 1 teaspoon
Carrot/Gajar - 1/2 to 1 grated
Clarified Butter/Ghee - 1 teaspoon (optional)
Coriander leaves - to garnish
Instructions
1.Heat 1 tablespoon, put chana dal, urad dal, mustard seeds, asafoetida powder, turmeric powder, curry leaves, green chili and grated ginger. Saute well.
2.Then, put the chopped tomato, green peas, salt to taste and roasted cashew nuts pieces. Cover and cook for 2 to 3 minutes. Boil about 3 cups of water.
3.Heat 1 to 2 teaspoon oil in a wok/kadhai. Put a pinch of asafoetida powder and turmeric powder. Put the sooji and roast on low flame.
4.Then, add the warm water. Put the sugar and grated carrot. Add the roasted sooji in small quantity and mix. Put ghee on it. Garnish with coriander leaves.
5.Cover and cook for 1 minute. Mix well. As, it cools down a bit, for serving take a bowl full of upma, invert on the plate and serve.
6.The Upma | Khara Bath is ready to be served.

Upma | Khara Bath is a tasty and healthy dish. Besides, breakfast you can serve this dish for snacks or any meal. It is a wholesome meal. It requires easily available ingredients. Besides, you can add vegetables of your choice. Adding the ghee adds a different flavor, and gives it a nice texture. This dish is different from the regular upma. You can add onion also while making this dish, if you want.
In place of cashew nuts, you can put peanuts.
For 1 cup of sooji take 3 cups of water.
Adding the sooji in small quantity prevents lump formation.
