Train Cab Ride NL / HSL / Amsterdam - Breda - Eindhoven / TRAXX Intercity / Feb 2021

Now, let's take a new ride! This week the choice was yours! On youtube you could choose between a sprinter ride in the early morning between Haarlem and Hoorn, a sprinter ride during the night time curfew in Amsterdam or this HSL ride from Amsterdam all the way to Eindhoven via Breda! Well here it is!

We start the ride with a locomotive that's just back from the factory after its been overhauled. On the picture you can see everything is still shiny as well. Nothing has changed on the colors of the locomotive, it had just a technical upgrade after running up and down on the HSL for a long time already.

We depart with a 2 minute delay because we were departing from another platform then we normally do. The train manager waits for everyone to be on board. For us the task to maintain maximum speed until we're back on schedule again.

On arrival on Schiphol Airport we're almost on time! Just after the 30 seconds mark we arrive at the platform and open the doors. From there we depart on time again. After departure we soon mee the first voltage change over to enter the high speed line. All the drivers actions are noted in the video for you. More about the voltage change over can be found on my instagram as well.

As soon as we reach the maximum TRAXX speed we soon meet the Groene Harttunnel. This is the longest train tunnel in in the Netherlands. Specifics about the lengt, depth and width are mentioned in the video.

31:33 Phase Lock

A Phase Lock separates two phases on the HSL. This is done to prevent too many train running under one phase and draining too much energy from the wires. The pantographs can stay up at this sections but the driver must shut down the high voltage systems when running from one phase to the other. The 400 meters of wire in the Phase Lock are without power. Only if a train would strand over there power can be set unto the 400 meter wire.

At this point we need to change voltage again. Back from the 25kV to 1.5kV on the normal line. The driver shuts down all the systems and lowers the pantographs. When the whole train has entered the 1.5kV section the pantographs can be raised again and all systems will be activated.

On entering the HSL we need to change voltage again. At the Barendrecht location entering ERTMS and changing voltage are done over a long length of tracks. On our way to Breda we will meet a few short tunnels as well.

Between Lage Zwaluwe and Breda we will again leave the HSL. This time the train will run without power for about 7.5km because the Phase Lock and the Voltage Change over are really close together. Restarting the systems in between won't have any effect.

From Breda we take another train to Eindhoven. This train arrived with a small delay at Breda. Hence our delay at departure. On our way to Tilburg you will see many many spotters on the route. This is because a load of freight trains were diverted that day due to maintenance work on the Betuwe Route.
